Glen Innes Highlands’ unique climate allows for many gardeners to produce stunning cool climate gardens.
Unlike most of Australia’s gardens, gardens of the New England must be drought hardy, frost resistant and be prepared for downpours of rain (except in times of drought).
Each change of the four seasons brings about a new journey for gardeners in the area. British settlers named this area the New England because the climate reminded them of their homeland, and it is because of this and the cooler climate that many gardens in Glen Innes take on an old English style.
The Glen Innes & District Garden Club is very active and hosts local garden tours throughout the year. For more information, contact (02) 6732 4015 or 0401 638 918.
Explore the local parks and gardens, as well as the church gardens around town. Take a drive through the tree-lined streets to see what people are planting or choose your own at the Cool Climate Garden Centre.
